About the location qr code
The code contains a geo: URI, which phones hand to their default maps application. It points at coordinates rather than an address, which is what you want for a field, a gate, a festival entrance or anywhere the postal address is unhelpful.
Latitude comes first and runs from -90 to 90; longitude second, from -180 to 180. Swapping them is the usual mistake and lands the pin somewhere unexpected rather than failing.
Frequently asked questions
- Is anything I enter sent to a server?
- No. The QR code is generated by JavaScript running on your own device, and nothing you type - a Wi-Fi password, a phone number, a contact card - is uploaded, stored or logged. You can disconnect from the network after the page loads and it keeps working.
- Where do I find the coordinates?
- Long-press the spot in almost any maps app and it will show a latitude and longitude you can copy. They are two decimal numbers, latitude first.
- Which map app does it open?
- Whichever is the default on the phone. The geo: format is generic rather than tied to one provider, so it works with Google Maps, Apple Maps and others.
- Do these codes expire, or need an account?
- No. The code contains the content itself rather than a link to us, so there is nothing to expire, nothing to track and no service that can stop working. Once you have downloaded it, it will keep scanning forever.
