About the word counter
Words are counted the way a word processor counts them: anything separated by whitespace is one word, so hyphenated words, contractions, numbers and non-Latin scripts each count once. That is the number you are usually checking against.
Reading time assumes 225 words a minute, which is a typical adult silent reading speed for ordinary prose, and speaking time assumes 130, which is a comfortable presenting pace. Both round up, because a piece of writing never takes zero minutes.

- Is my text sent anywhere?
- No. Everything runs inside your browser. Nothing you paste or type is uploaded, stored or logged, and the page keeps working with the network disconnected.
- Does it count the same way as Word or Google Docs?
- For ordinary prose, yes. All three split on whitespace, so a hyphenated word counts once and a number counts as a word.
- How is character count affected by emoji?
- An emoji counts as one character here, which is what a person would say. Many tools report two or more because they count UTF-16 units rather than characters - a family emoji can score eleven.
