About converting kilometres to miles
A statute mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres, so one kilometre is 0.62137119 miles. Multiply kilometres by 0.6214, or use the runner's trick: multiply by 5 and divide by 8, which is accurate to within a tenth of a percent.
This is the statute mile, the one on road signs and in running distances. A nautical mile is 1,852 metres - about 15% longer - and is used at sea and in the air. The two are not interchangeable and confusing them is the usual error here.
