About the area converter
Area units scale with the square of their length units, which is why the numbers are less intuitive than they look: a square yard is nine square feet rather than three, because both sides tripled.
For land, the acre and the hectare are the units that matter. An acre is 43,560 square feet - historically the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day - and a hectare is 10,000 square metres, or about 2.47 acres.
Frequently asked questions
- Is anything I enter sent anywhere?
- No. Every conversion runs inside your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or logged, and the page keeps working with the network disconnected.
- How many square feet are in a square metre?
- About 10.763910. Note that this is not 3.28 - the conversion factor for length is squared when converting area.
- How big is an acre?
- 43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square metres. A common mental picture is a rectangle one furlong long and one chain wide; a more useful one is that it is a little smaller than a football pitch.
- How accurate are these conversions?
- The factors are the exact legal definitions rather than rounded approximations - an inch is exactly 0.0254 metres and a pound exactly 0.45359237 kilograms - and results are shown to eight significant figures, which is more precision than any practical measurement carries.
